Beta testing the new GV2 groups: Big Signal group with as many volunteering forum members as possible?

Dear fellow beta testers,

What do you think about making a big Signal group with as many volunteering forum members as possible - to really try to test the limits of the new groupsV2 functionality in a big group setting…?

We have been discussing this already among the “regulars” from the forum. We identified one stumbling block, namely that many of the forum beta testers would be happy to participate in principle, but since that also means, that one would reveal the phone number, profile name, profile photo to others, many also might be reluctant to do that… which is totally understandable.

There are some ways of mitigating this:

  • you could change your profile name, profile photo to junk info just for testing (still would reveal the phone number unfortunately)
  • If you have a spare phone lying around there are ways to obtain a temporary phone number for registration (@newuser proposed https://piracy.now.sh/security/#sms) Thereby you could join anonymously.

So for those who have a separate Signal test phone or those who don’t really have an issue sharing the aforementioned things DM me (with your phone number) and I will add you to the GV2 group.

The purpose - see how groups V2 behave with many members, changes and traffic

Any suggestions to make this more compatible with privacy concerns are very welcome!

EDIT: Group links are here! You can now also join the big group via link or QR code:

Signal Group

It should then resolve to this on your phone:

EDIT: Changed QR code and link to the latest. link was reset.

You can also Dm him…

For people who are not generally opposed to sharing their phone number but don’t like it linked to the forum account, it might be nice if someone shares his anonymous number here or by DM.

how do you give a test or anonymous number (so not your personal official number) and configure it on the same phone? do you have a second phone on which to do a second Signal installation?

On android you can make a second user and install it there. You could also compile it yourself with a different package name or wait until some user dies this. Maybe molly will receive this so you’d only have to install it.

I’m also looking for such an option as I’m not home now and can’t compile my self (yeah yeah that’s what my server should be for… But vacation is vacation xD)

and both users will share the same app (settings, contact, pic…)?

Is 150 a technical limitation of the functionality or once it has entered the stable version, the groups will have many more users than 150? as Telegram does that have thousands of users for each group

Nope it’s comparable to a PC where you have different users, with different apps and different accounts. You can even log into another google account.

Read here for mor information. (This is the first usable link duckduckgo gave me. I didnt exactly read it so your milage may very)

Feel free to pm me for mor Info’s… So we can leave this thread clean

Participating as well (thanks for adding me, @RainerZufall)

Your country code before the number is +1?

That’s what I have. Set up the old phone of my girl friend with a new number

Maybe we can also wait for group sharing by URL? That could be a better way to handle confidentiality.

True, but since it has its own feature flag, I am not sure this is rolling out soon. :man_shrugging: Other than that, it would still not solve the issue of sharing your phone number…

I suspect that its a technical limitation of having groups organized as a mesh.

please add me, DM sent

It’s a technical limitation of the way we send messages (your device encrypts and sends one message to every other device in the group). We’re actively working on ways to improve this and allow for much larger groups.
